Roy Dewhurst 1945-2017
Roy Dewhurst, 71, passed away on March 30, 2017 at the Syracuse V.A. Hospital.
He was born in New Hartford, NY on June 8, 1945 to the late Albert P. and Alice Cress Dewhurst and received his education in New Hartford schools.
Immediately following high school, Roy enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and served as a prison guard in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
On June 6, 1970 he was united in marriage with Mary Collver in the Paris Hill Church, a loving union of 38 years until her death on January 16, 2009.
Prior to his retirement, Roy was employed as a foreman for Marcy Excavating.
He had a lifelong love of cars, whether it be race cars or show cars.
Roy was especially proud of the 1970 Ford Mustang 429Jet that he and Mary built, as well as the 1936 Chevy Hot Rod truck he built with Steve’s Restoration and Hot Rods that earned top honors at the most recent Detroit Autorama February 24th-26th.
As a racing fan, he could frequently be found at Oswego Speedway with the Otto Sitterly #7 Team owned by John Nicotra Racing.
His memberships included the Sopranos Car Club in the past, AM Vets and the American Legion.
Roy is survived by his two daughters; Tracey Dewhurst of Atlanta, GA. and Heather Dewhurst of New Hartford, his dear friend and brother in law; Phil Hale, his brother; Harold Dewhurst of New Hartford, his sisters; Linda Banks and Dorthy Booth, both of Utica and his dachshund; Daisy Duke and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sisters; Edith Hale, Evelyn Fedrow Betty Sherman Carolyn Dewhurst and Florence Miner. Roy was also predeceased by his brothers; Colin and Thomas Dewhurst.
Roy’s family would like to thank his oncologist, Dr. Susan Segreti DNP, RN, AOCNP for all of her compassionate care during Roy’s illness.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, April 2 from 2-5 at the Smith Funeral Home, 3022 Oneida St. Sauquoit. His funeral service will be Monday at 11:00 at the funeral home. Interment will be in Norwich Corners Cemetery.
