Obituary for Alma Walton (Ferguson)
Mrs. Alma Walton, age 80, of Sauquoit, NY, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home after a brief illness, with her family at her side, on Saturday, April 15, 2017.
Alma was born in New Hartford on September 5, 1936, a daughter of the late Frank A. and Clara (Jones) Ferguson. She was raised and educated locally, graduating from Sauquoit Valley Central High School. On September 6, 1957, she was united in marriage to William K. Walton in New Hartford Methodist Church. The couple shared in a union of over 58 years prior to Mr. Walton’s passing on March 23, 2016.
Alma was employed at J. C. Penney’s Department Store for over 30 years prior to her retirement in 2016. Mrs. Walton was an active member of the Sauquoit United Methodist Church were she loved working with the Sunday school and youth; her other memberships include, the Paris Hill Garden Club and the Sauquoit Valley Friends and Neighbors.
Alma’s top priority was her family, she spoiled her children and grandchildren, and was never missing from any function. With a love for travel, flowers, and bird watching Alma would regularly be seen outside getting her hands dirty. Alma had a passion for art, not only as an artist but also as a museum patron.
She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Audrey and Chuck Arnold of Burlington Flats, Shelley and Russell Nichols of Sauquoit, and Stacey and Anthony Voce of Chadwicks; a son Jeff Walton of Sauquoit; her grandchildren, Leanne and Dr. Devin Hull, Dustin and Becky Arnold, Mason Olmstead, Mallory and Cody Henderson, Alec and Alexis Voce, Amy, Michael and Nikki Walton, Kelsey and Andrew Roberts; six great-grandchildren, Rylin Turley, Anise and Brielle Arnold, Chloe and Elise Hull, and Carter Roberts; two sisters, Eleanor Wheelock and June Murphy. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws; she also leaves Krissy Corr and Rhonda Moran who were very close to her heart and special to her. She was preceded in death by a sister, Florence Jones; and a brother, Frank Ferguson, Jr.
Alma’s family has had the support of many people, especially from her pastor, Carl Getz, her doctor Martin Morell and Hospice and Palliative Care, all whom they thank from the bottom of their hearts.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday afternoon from 2:00 to 4:00 at the Sauquoit United Methodist Church, corner of Mohawk Street and Pinnacle Road. Mrs. Walton’s memorial service will be celebrated immediately following visitation at 4:00 at the church. Interment will take place in Norwich Corners Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
