Edward J. Rice 1928-2018
Edward J. Rice, 89, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 24, 2018 while a patient at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare.
He was born on November 8, 1928 in Hudson Falls, NY to the late Harry E. and Pearl M. Wells Rice.
Ed was a graduate of Hudson Falls High School and continued his education at Mohawk Valley Institute of Technology where he earned his Associates Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
On June 19, 1954, he was united in marriage with Mary Beth Peck in Bacon Hill, NY.
Ed began his working career with Sandy Hill Iron and Brass in Hudson Falls, and prior to his retirement, was employed for 43 years as a design engineer with Special Metals in New Hartford.
He was a dedicated member of Living Faith Bible Church in Sauquoit where he served as Elder, and a former member of Immanuel Baptist Church in New Hartford, where he served as Deacon for many years. He was a member of the Christian Business Men's Committee, and Gideons International.
He always enjoyed the outdoors and being physically active. He regularly took joy in God's handiwork, particularly in his bird watching with the Kirkland Bird Club, whose activities he took part in since at least 1986.
He worked out with passion and intensity since 1981 at the All American Fitness Center in New Hartford, extending his active life well beyond his surgeries in 2001 for heart bypass, in 2002 for an aortic aneurysm, and in 2005 for double iliac aneurysms.
After receiving rehabilitation for his aortic aneurysm at the Sitrin Home, he returned there on a weekly basis with Mary Beth to minister the gospel of Jesus Christ through scripture and hymns. Not too long afterward, they added a similar ministry at the Presbyterian Home each month.
Ed is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 63 years, Mary Beth; his children, Dave (Jackie) of Newport, NY; Lydia of VA; Nathan of New Hartford, NY; and Marvin of MA; his sister, S. Jane Story of Hudson Falls, NY; his in-laws, Maggie Rice of SC; Rhoda and Howard Shaw of NJ; Henry Peck of Cambridge, NY; Alta and Glen Shupe of Scotia, NY; and David and Mira Peck of Clifton Park, NY; as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his eldest son, James Harold Rice, on November 24, 1979; and his brother, Thomas L. Rice, on July 21, 2017.
A gathering to remember Ed’s life will be held on April 21 at 1:00 pm at Living Faith Bible Church, 2922 Oneida St., Sauquoit, NY.
