David J. Christian 1949-2018
David J. Christian, 68, passed away unexpectedly on May 19, 2018 at home. He was born in Utica on November 4, 1949, the oldest son of the late Lester and Beverly Rose Christian and was a 1968 graduate of Sauquoit Valley Central School.
Subsequent to his graduation, David served with the United States Army from 1969-1975.
While growing up in Sauquoit, he was active as a Junior Firefighter with the Sauquoit Volunteer Fire Department and after his time in the Army, joined their ranks as a Volunteer Firefighter.
On October 25, 1980 he was united in marriage with Lisa Towne in Syracuse.
Prior to his retirement, David was employed by LeMoyne College in grounds maintenance, where he planted thousands of flowers, worked hours of overtime during snow storms to get sidewalks and pathways plowed, and spent many summer evenings watering the athletic fields. He loved being able to work outside.
When he wasn’t working, he was playing golf, gardening, drinking beers with his family and friends, enjoying music, and daydreaming about Corvettes and Harley Davidsons. Despite issues with his health that forced him into early retirement, David’s sense of humor was impeccable. He spent his life cracking jokes. David cared very much for those around him, loved living in scenic Central New York surrounded by rolling hills and farms, and enjoyed taking long evening drives with his wife. He had a great root beer float the night before he passed away.
David is survived by loving wife of 37 years, Lisa, his daughter and her partner; Kelly Christian and Jesse Avina, his son and daughter in law; Mike and Robin Christian, his seven sisters; Andrea and Jerry Brown, Roberta Christian, Patricia and Ted Bilsky, Cindy Laporte and Rick Raley, Jeanne and Deven Wailes, Merry and Rich Fiorentino and Karen Christian, his two brothers; Scott and Teresa Christian and Rod and Susan Christian as well as many nieces and nephews, friends, cousins, and his feline companion, Squeak.
David’s family will be receiving visitors on Sunday, May 27 from 3-5 at the Smith Funeral Home, 3022 Oneida St. Sauquoit with services and military honors following at 5:00.
