Janice Brownell Elmer, 1934-2018
Janice Elmer, 83, passed away on June 30, 2018 at the St. Luke’s home. Born July 7, 1934 to parents Emerson Greene and Natalie Wicks Brownell of Cassville, she was christened Janice Wicks Brownell. Janice graduated with honors from Sauquoit Valley High School where she was crowned Beauty Queen in her senior year. Miss Brownell attended St. Lawrence University where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and the women’s singing ensemble. She graduated with a degree in zoology. In 1956, Janice married U.S. Army Captain Edward C. Bigley of Albany, NY; they traveled extensively and had two children, Claire and Carolyn. Ed and Jan divorced in 1967. Jan Bigley then taught 5th grade at West Winfield, Leonardsville, and Bridgewater. In 1970, Janice married Milton G. Elmer of Ilion, NY at the 1st Presbyterian Church, and had two children, James and Barbara, and three stepchildren Patrick, Christopher, and Corinne. Mrs. Elmer often substituted in the Ilion and Frankfort schools. Janice Wicks Brownell Bigley Elmer is survived by her husband of 48 years, her 7 children, and 11 grandchildren; she is also survived by her youngest brother, Richard Brownell, and predeceased by her younger siblings Arthur Brownell, Sue Mondi and Norma Jean Kochanowski. Calling hours will be Saturday, July 7 from 2-4 at the Smith Funeral Home, 3022 Oneida Street, Sauquoit with Funeral service following at 4:00. Internment will be at Crown Hill Memorial Park at the convenience of the family.
