Obituary for Albert A. ""Poochie"" Del Medico

Mr. Albert A. “Poochie” Del Medico passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side, on, October 17, 2018.
He was born on August 12, 1930 in Chadwicks, NY the son of the late Umberto and Elisa (Perin) Del Medico from Valdagno, Italy.
Al graduated from Chadwicks High School in 1948 and in October of that year he enlisted in the United States Navy assigned to destroyer USS R.L. Wilson DD 847. He served 4 years with the 6th fleet in Europe and the Mediterranean; he was honorably discharged in October 1952 as MM2/C.
In October 1951 he married Dolores Nicholas from Marcy, NY; together they had 3 children.
Al was employed from 1951-1958 as Final Inspector for the Kelsey Hayes Corporation. While at Kelsey Hayes he attended Utica College and graduated in 1956 as an Electronic System Technician. From 1958-1976 he was employed at General Electric, French Road and the Broad Street Plant as an Engineering Tech Leader.
In 1976 Al moved to Phoenix, Arizona where he met and married Marilyn Moody Davis, R.N., who was originally from Marcy, NY.
Al was employed at Motorola for the next 17 years in Scottsdale, AZ as an Engineering Assistant. He retired in 1993 and for the next few years enjoyed retirement with his wife by taking many trips together, including a cruise to Alaska with their good friends, Vernon and Georgetta Harris.
In 2005, due to health reasons he and his wife returned to the Utica area and resided in New Hartford where they enjoyed the next five years together in their lovely home with a wooded back yard. Al loved to watch the birds that came to his bird feeder.
In 2010, his beloved wife Marilyn, of 34 years passed away. Their marriage was of lasting and true love. Al was a wonderful husband and the best caretaker any wife could have. Her family truly loved Al and thanked him for his total commitment to her and for being a wonderful stepfather.
One of Al’s greatest gifts was the gift of always being willing to help out anyone in need. Over the years he touched many people in a multitude of ways by his willingness and readiness to do whatever he could. He was truly one from the “Greatest Generation”.
In 2010, Al had the opportunity to travel to Italy to the birthplace of his mother and to his family’s homestead where he was able to visit with relatives that he had never met before. He spent two weeks getting to know cousins who became very dear to him over the years.
Al belonged to the American Legion Post 1376 in New Hartford, NY. He was involved with the Tin-Can Sailors (destroyer class) of Somerville, Mass. and the U.SS R.L. Wilson Association.
Surviving are two sons, Gary Del Medico, and Brian Del Medico, both of Utica; a daughter, Diane (Peter) Crough of San Luis Obispo, CA; his stepchildren, who all loved him dearly and affectionately referred to him as “Beep”, Kathy (Bob) Moorhead of Herkimer, Carol (Bob) Jubenville of Clinton, Rick Davis of Glendale, AZ, and Terri (Greg) Wood of Marcy; and Jeane Davis of AZ; his grandsons, Ryan Crough of CA, Joel Del Medico of Inlet, Eric (Grace) Del Medico of CA, and Michael (Jessica) Del Medico of Delaware; his step-grandchildren, Michael (Ali) Moorhead of IN, Kari Moorhead of New Hartford, Nicole (E.J.) Ivie of VA, Stephen (Melissa) Panella of Salisbury Center, Jessica (Nathaniel) Lee of PA, Afton (Michael) Friend of AZ, Joshua Magnitzky and his wife, Heather Leitz, of PA, Danielle Magnitzky (Keith Holloway) of Marcy, and Tiffany (Jeff) Poole of AZ. Also surviving are 22 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandson; a brother, Jake Del Medico of Chadwicks; a sister, Gloria Owens of Brookfield, and their families; and many cousins in Italy. Al enjoyed many friends over the years including people in Arizona and Utica, with special mention of his caring neighbors, Laura and Dan Morehouse and their daughters, Ellie and Hannah; Craig and Theresa Mathews, William Mahady; his good friends from his high school class of 1948; and Ron Dearlove, and Jim and Nancy Mason. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Otto, Fredrick, and Bruno Del Medico; and a sister, Norma Miller.
A sincere thank-you is offered to Dr. Bhisham Garg for the guidance, compassion, and long-time care that he shared with both Al and Marilyn over the years; it was of great comfort to the family.
