John J. Wood, 67, of Cassville passed away on Monday, January 21, 2019 at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare with his loving family by his side.
He was born on May 10, 1951 in Utica, the son of Donald and Beatrice (Alsheimer) Wood and was a graduate of Sauquoit Valley Central Schools. On May 11, 1974, Woody was united in marriage to Candace Moles at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Chadwicks, sharing a blessed union of 45 years. Woody was employed with the Town of Paris Highway Department and as Highway Superintendent for 40 years until his retirement in 2008 when he underwent a Liver Transplant at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. He was a member of the NYS Association of Highway Superintendents, Oneida County Association of Highway Superintendents and a lifelong member of the Sauquoit Fire Department.
Woody was a very loving husband, father and grandfather. He adored time spent with his granddaughters. Woody had a passion for playing the slots at many casinos and in his spare time he couldn’t sit still and could always be found tinkering in his garage. Woody loved people and certainly had the gift of gab, also his unforgettable quote "Somethin' to do."
Surviving are his loving wife, Candy, Cassville; daughters, Tara (Marvin) Martin, Sauquoit and Erin (Nicholas) Pellegrino; granddaughters, Kiley and Ashley Martin; sister, Norma Mickle; brothers, Donald (Cindy) Wood, Gerald (Susan) Wood, Michael (Shelly) Wood and Jeffrey Wood; sister-in-law, Patty Moles; brother-in-law, Kenneth (Danna) Moles and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister, Katie Wood; brother, Scott Wood and brother-in-law, Peter Moles.
Woody’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Strong Memorial Hospital, Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare, Faxton Regional Cancer Center and to all his wonderful family and friends for all their care and compassion.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday from 3-6 pm at the Smith Funeral Home, 3022 Oneida St., Sauquoit. Memorial Services will commence at the conclusion of visitation at 6 pm.
Remembrances in Woody’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society and to please consider organ donation. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
